Efforts to reduce the proliferation and misuse of small arms in Cambodia have included public awareness campaigns (above) and tightening of national gun laws.

Research by Cambodia’s Working Group for Weapons Reduction (WGWR) has found a 17.5% drop in gun incidents in 2006 compared to the previous year. The research, based on media reporting, found 620 incidents in 2006, down from 752 reported in 2005. Most of these were robberies committed with handguns.

WGWR has attributed the drop in gun violence to improvement of national gun laws and the implementation of related arms control strategies. In 2005 Cambodia's gun law was revised, strictly limiting civilian ownership of guns. Cambodian NGOs, including IANSA member WGWR, have worked to raise public awareness and develop strategies to reduce gun ownership and incidents of gun violence throughout the country.
