Kenya violence 2008

IANSA members in Kenya have joined other civil society organisations, donor agencies, religious and business leaders in forming the Electoral Violence Response Initiative, a project to counter the violence that has broken out since 30 December 2007.

Messages of solidarity

We  wish to express our solidarity with the people of Kenya and express our support for the efforts to solve the crisis.

The West African Network on Small Arms (WAANSA) has observed with great pain the events unfolding in Kenya since the last December political elections. WAANSA is deeply concerned with the escalation in violence resulting in the loss of valuable human lives and property.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Kenya especially those who struggle daily with us to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and the internally displaced. While feeling desperate and looking on helplessly as we watch blood letting attacks on innocent babies, children, women and the aged on our television sets, we hurt even more because of the lack of speedy resolution of the crisis.

We, however, thank God for the intervention of Busumuru Kofi Annan and his team in helping to find a peaceful solution to the crisis and pray that the outcome will be something all the parties in the dispute will embrace.

We assure our Kenyan friends of our constant prayers and remain in faith that all the ills plaguing Kenya end soon.

As the Kenya story unfolded I had the images of our comrades. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and all the Kenyan people. Kenya was one of the last remaining beacons of political and economic hope for the entire continent. We will not give up on Kenya.

We are praying for Kenya to come back to normal. The questions are: Why Kenya? Why now? Keep well and don’t give up the fight for peace.
