Gun Destruction Ceremony in Honduras

Foro Ciudadano, an IANSA member in Honduras, sent us these photos from a small arms destruction ceremony on 7 April 2003 in the capital, Tegucigalpa. The event was attended by the President of the Republic and the Mayor of Tegucigalpa. Schoolchildren also brought in their toy guns for destruction. A similar event was held simultaneously in San Pedro Sula, near the Guatemalan border. The ceremonies marked the beginning of a national program on 'Small Arms, Security and Justice', to include a public awareness campaign, research and improvements to the gun laws.

Honduras has seen 686 gun homicides in the first 3 months of 2003. At this rate, its annual gun homicide rate will exceed 40 per 100,000, making it one of the most violent countries in the world.
