Arms into Art Week in the Republic of Montenegro

Work in progress 12-19 November 2004

The United Nations Development Project, together with IANSA members Pax Christi Netherlands and other local NGOs organised an Arms into Art Week in the Republic of Montenegro.

Artists and NGOs from Serbia & Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and the province of Kosovo took part in the event. Together, the artists sculpted a symbol of peace out of 500 decommissioned arms donated by the Government of the Republic of Montenegro.

A workshop held during the week, 17-18 November, discussed peacebuilding and disarmament initiatives in the region in order to create and foster a positive environment for sustainable disarmament efforts, and established a plan of action in order to strengthen their regional network (SEENCA).

The Arms for Art week increased visibility for the disarmament processes in the region and was an excellent example of a coordinated action by government, civil society and the international community on a relatively limited budget.
