Slovenia

Unlike the other states that were formerly part of the Yugoslav Federation, Slovenia is not thought to have a serious SALW problem – government figures set the registered possession of firearms at 5% and just 350 SALW were confiscated in 2002. However, this country is a favoured transit route for arms into Macedonia and Kosovo from places such as Malaysia. Government corruption is suspected but not proven. Before Austrians tightened their weapons legislation, compressed gas guns were smuggled from Austria to Slovenia and Croatia, where they were reconstructed as firearms.

The huge Slovenian arms industry went into severe decline after 1991 but has recovered somewhat with contracts to rearm the army prior to applying for NATO membership.
