Bereaved Scottish parents will attend an anti-gun rally at the Izmir International Fair (Turkey) on 10 September. They have recorded a Turkish version of a song originally recorded by parents of the victims of the 1996 Dunblane massacre (Scotland, UK).

The song, Silahlara Hayir ('Throw These Guns Away'), has been recorded by David Grimason and Turkish singer Nico. David's 2-year old son Alistair was fatally injured by a stray bullet when the family were on holiday at Foca (Turkey) in 2003. The Grimasons have been closely involved with the gun violence prevention campaign in Turkey ever since.

'Turkey will one day join the European Union. It must not become the Wild West of Europe.' said John Crozier, who is attending the rally with David. His daughter Emma died in the Dunblane massacre.

There are hundreds of deaths every year in Turkey due to the practice of shooting guns into the air during celebrations.

The 2005 rally received significant coverage from the national press, since it was held shortly after the death of 23-year-old bride Begum Kartal. Begum was killed three days before her wedding by a stray bullet fired during celebrations. The Umut Foundation is proposing a revison to the gun laws to prevent this senseless carnage.

The English version features children from the Dunblane primary school singing (including some of the brothers and sisters of those killed). Click here to download the original version of the song in English. (Warning: 1MB audio file)
