The NRA's latest publication has sparked extensive debate in the media and online, with commentators calling it 'alarmist' and 'fear-mongering'.
A leaked brochure by the US National Rifle Association (NRA) mounts a scathing attack on gun control advocates, NGOs, the United Nations, feminists and the media.
'Freedom in Peril' dedicates a full page to discussing IANSA, inaccurately described as a 'United Nations non-governmental organisation'. It features the NRA’s persistent and unfounded claim that the UN is working towards ‘a global gun ban treaty’. (This is possibly a reference to the proposed Arms Trade Treaty which aims to regulate international transfers of conventional weapons.)
The pamphlet is so extremist that it was suspected as being a hoax when it featured on the online news site Wonkette in late December. But recent reports, including a statement by an NRA spokesperson, have confirmed the source of the document as an NRA publication that has not yet been published.
The brochure can be downloaded here.
