Sri Lankan politician assassinated

Nadarajah Raviraj, a parliamentarian with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), was shot and killed on 10 November 2006 in Colombo (Sri Lanka), along with his bodyguard.

Reports suggest that the gunmen used a fully automatic military rifle, of the type used by the Sri Lankan military, which has lost many of these weapons during the long civil war in Sri Lanka. There are 2.3 million guns in Sri Lanka in a population of 20 million, according to the Small Arms Survey. Almost 90% of these weapons are possessed by civilians.
