West African gun treaty to be finalised in 2006

Transformation of ECOWAS small arms moratorium into legally binding ecowas convention on small arms and light weapons

Dr Sola Ogunbanwo (pictured left), Representative of Nigeria at the January 2006 Preparatory Committee Meeting for the 2006 UN Review Conference on Small Arms in NewYork has been designated as lead international consultant and Mr. Ilhan Berkol of GRIP as consultant, for the transformation of the ECOWAS Moratorium on Small Arms into a legally binding ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons;

The transformation of the Moratorium is a follow-up to the Evaluation Study of the Moratorium conducted by Dr Ogunbanwo in December 2002. The Draft ECOWAS Convention is expected to be considered first at a meeting of experts from ECOWAS Member States, then at a meeting of ECOWAS Ministers; and a final decision is expected to be taken during the 2006 ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government.
