21 September is the UN International Day of Peace, and IANSA members around the world are planning activities to celebrate this event.

India: Student fora in Nagpur
Organised by the Medicovet Rural Welfare Society
1) Students forum at the Government Medical College and Hospital.
2) In Nagpur University Postgraduate Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Department - Study Circle.

The problems associated with civilian possession of small arms in India were presented, followed by a debate involving postgraduate students. The report and contents of these discussions have been sent to the Governor of Maharashtra State and the central government.

Conference on peace and small arms in Burundi
In Burundi, IANSA members Dagropass-Amagaranikindi and Association Ishaka, called for a day of reflection and convened a conference themed "peace is possible if we control arms."

Cameroon: Three-days of events and celebration for peace

Cameroon members Association for the Protection and the Education of the Child (CAPEC) and the One Father Association organised three days of activities, which included a children's art competition, a radio quiz, and a panel discussion on peace at the British Council with youth leaders. The festivities concluded with a choral vigil in Elig-Edzoa Yaoundé.

Nepal: peace rally

More than 30,000 people will be involved in a rally in Kathmandu, campaigning to reduce the defence budget by 10% annually, increase investment in social security and to call for a ceasefire. Participants will include by human rights organisations, women's groups, disabled groups, dalits, schoolchildren, teachers, professors, parents, advocates, religious groups, business and industries, trade union, travel and tourism, media, engineers and civil servants. IANSA members attending will include SAP-Nepal, SASA Net Nepal and SAP-International.

The rally will start from Tinkune at 10:30 and will end in Maiti Ghar.


Uganda: Rally and events organised by Japanese and Uganda IANSA members

In the Northern part of Uganda, nearly 300 war affected children participated in a rally, including 50 former child soldiers who been enforced to fight by the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) armed group, and 50 orphans who lost their parents due to the conflict or HIV/AIDS.

With the banner written "No more child sodiers and Small Arms", those children marched around Gulu city where is still suffer from the conflict between LRA and government forces with music, traditional dancing, and a Giant Peace Dove, promoting the Roots and Shoots campaign, a symbol of peace and hope.

Before the rally, a small arms workshop was held, organised by UANSA and JANSA members.

Karimojong dancers will be dancing to promote a culture of peace at an event organised by the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CECORE). The northeastern region of Uganda shared by the Karimojong and the Iteso of Soroti has been marred by violence perpetrated by cattle rustlers upon the people of Teso.

Photo exhibition launched in Trinidad & Tobago
A Control Arms photo exhibition will be launched at the Central Bank Auditorium in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad & Tobago. The event has been organised by the Women's Institute for Alternative Development (WINAD), with the UN Information Centre and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Film screenings in London, UK
Two films chronicling the lives of people suffering the effects of armed violence in Latin America will be shown at the Ritzy cinema in London. The event is being organised by the DocHouse and International Alert. Click here for more information.
