| Tuesday 8th July
One of the main goals of this meeting
was to establish ways in which NGOs can have an impact on the
BMS and finding ways
to influence delegates so that they may incorporate or emphasize
the importance of women and gender issues in reviewing the PoA.
There were also a series of questions discussed in the meeting
in an attempt to explore the general goals of the Women’s
Network. These were:
How can we increase the gender sensitivity
and capacity of IANSA member organizations to address women’s
concerns?
- a women’s focal point within each NGO member of IANSA
must be established
- enhance the women’s portal on IANSA web, give feedback
and materials to generate partnerships
- form regional partnerships
- share information and experiences
How can we educate women’s groups
about small arms availability and misuse and encourage them
to participate in IANSA?
- women organizations and advocates need solidarity and information
in order to overcome isolation
- form women to women group partnerships (ex: Million Mom March)
- value and create spaces and mechanisms for women to support
women
How can we ensure that small arms forums and key decision makers
emphasize gender perspectives and promote the priorities of women?
- hold decision makers and representatives accountable
- exploit the media
- form a work plan with a 2 year projection in order to ensure
that these issues are heard at the small arms review conference
