Biennial Meeting of States

Women and Small Arms
Monday July 7, 2003

This Gender and Small Arms seminar was vibrant and positive. The focus was on women and armed conflict; women, guns and the home; and the actions of IANSAs women’s network. All speakers talked about their work campaigning for gun control locally, nationally, regionally and internationally.

The speakers and the issues they covered are as follows:

1) Folade Mutota (Women’s Institute for Alternative Development, Trinidad & Tobago) Women Resisting Gun Violence in ‘Peaceful’ Nations
2) Dr. Olive Kobusingye (Injury Control Centre, Uganda), Women and the Health Costs of Gun Abuse
3) Ema Tagicakibau (Pacific Concerns Resource Centre/IANSA Fiji) Women Organising for Gun Control Legislation – local to regional
4) Dr. Vanessa Farr (Small Arms Survey/UNIFEM South Africa) Women, Gender and Small Arms Research: what’s the difference, and what’s going on?
5) Rebecca Peters (IANSA) The Women’s Network of IANSA – Moving Forward
