9 January 2006: The United Nations has launched its first major review of small arms controls in five years.
New reports depicting the human cost of armed violence in Haiti, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and in Sierra Leone have been prepared by the Control Arms campaign for the meeting.
The UN small arms Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) is being held at UN Headquarters in New York (US), 9-20 January 2006.
It will prepare the ground for a landmark UN conference on small arms controls in June.
The Control Arms campaign, coordinated by Amnesty International, IANSA and Oxfam International, is seeking support for an international Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) that would create global, legally binding arms controls, stopping weapons falling into the hands of despots and human rights abusers.
