At the invitation of Argentina, the President of the UN Security Council during March 2006, IANSA members gave a series of presentations to the Security Council on Thursday 16 March 2006. This was four days before the Security Council started its annual debate on tackling small arms proliferation.
The presentations took place as part of the Arria Formula, one of the ways in which civil society can engage in dialogue with the Security Council. IANSA Director Rebecca Peters was joined by Charles Nasibu from the Congolese disarmament network (RECAAL), Cate Buchanan of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva, and Brian Wood from Amnesty International.
The Security Council has previously adopted resolutions on small arms in regional contexts, such as Africa. This year it is expected to adopt its first global resolution on small arms. This will be a significant contribution in the approach to the UN Review Conference on small arms (26 June – 7 July).
