Brazil: Government announces permanent disarmament campaign

The Brazilian Minister of Justice has signed an agreement with IANSA member Viva Rio, establishing their disarmament campaign as a permanent state policy. Under this agreement, the first Saturday of July is declared "National day for a gun free Brazil" and the month of July will be devoted to campaigning for disarmament, preceded by 3 months of public advertising. According to Antonio Rangel of Viva Rio, more than half a million weapons were collected in Brazil between 2003 and 2009, and the number of firearm-related homicides was reduced by 11% for the same period. He said ‘disarmament is now considered a policy in the public interest, for example, just like vaccination’. More
