UN: Fourth week of the First Committee on Disarmament

Throughout  the UN First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, delegations have highlighted the negative impact of small arms proliferation on women's rights, human rights, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Delegations from many states including Japan, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, South Africa, Switzerland, Congo, and Brazil expressed their support and commitment to the UN Programme of Action on small arms (PoA) and to strengthening it as a key mechanism to address the issue of illicit trade in small arms. Today the General Assembly will vote on the 'Omnibus resolution'.
