US: Brady Center applauds nomination for ATF director post

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence applauds the Obama Administration’s nomination of a new director for the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The Bureau has been without a director since 2006. In August this year, The Brady Center issued a report criticising the ‘leadership vacuum’ in the ATF, saying it endangered public safety and national security. Paul Helmke of the Brady Center said, “Past ATF directors have been crucial advocates for strong law enforcement authority to combat gun trafficking and gun violence”. If the candidate Andrew Traver is appointed, “We are hopeful that he will be a strong voice for the strengthening and effective enforcement of our gun laws”. More
