Spate of family shootings by police in Argentina
In the past two months Argentina has seen at least 6 cases of current or former police officers committing family murder/suicides by firearm. One case that shocked the nation occurred in in Córdoba on 15 February, when a retired police officer killed his four children, aged 6-14, before turning the gun on himself. The next day a young police officer killed his girlfriend and himself in a McDonald's restaurant in downtown Buenos Aires. |

West Africa: Report from activists at the ECOWAS Summit

UN official calls for 'no arms to Africa'
A senior UN aid official has called for a global moratorium on arms sales to Africa during 2006, since these weapons are the root cause of 12.5 million people on the continent becoming displaced from their homes. Dennis McNamara, a special UN advisor on displacement, made the remarks in a news briefing on 2 February. |

Mass shootings in Philippines and US
There were two mass shootings on Monday 30 January. At least 8 people were killed when a group of attackers opened fire in a hall in Balabagan (Philippines). In Goleta, California (US) a woman shot and killed 7 people before committing suicide by shooting herself. As we learn more about these tragedies, and how they could be prevented in future, we will include the information on our website. Some details have emerged about the US shooting. |

Guatemala gun destruction
