Stop gun violence, urge Papua New Guinea NGOs
The Papua New Guinea government must implement its pledge to reduce gun violence, according to civil society organisations which came together at the launch of a new national disarmament network on 30 April in the capital Port Moresby.
The Coalition is calling for the government to implement the recommendations of the 2005 National Gun Summit, as a start to addressing the proliferation and misuse of small arms. |

33 shot dead at Virginia Tech University (US)
A student with two semi-automatic handguns murdered 32 people on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia (US) on 16 April. A further 29 people were injured before the perpetrator committed suicide. It appears that he had obtained the guns and ammunition legally, despite having a history of mental instability.
Firearm death rates in the US are 4-5 times as high as in most other industrialised countries where gun laws require licensing, registration, waiting periods, references, training and especially tight restrictions on handguns. None of these measures are required under the law in Virginia. |
