1000 killed every day: new IANSA report on gun violence

The global proliferation of small arms and light weapons represents an epidemic which should be addressed urgently, according to a new IANSA report released on 16 May. The report was launched at a press conference with Mick North, whose 5-year-old daughter Sophie died in the 1996 Dunblane (Scotland) massacre, and Charles Nasibu from the Congolese disarmament network (RECAAL), who is now a refugee in Norway after being arrested for doing research on arms trafficking. The report received media coverage in countries including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, India, South Africa, Spain, UK and Venezuela.

New factsheets on the impact of armed violence

The IANSA report can be used by campaigners for media advocacy during the Global Week of Action. Other new resources include 11 short factsheets on the impact of small arms proliferation, produced by the US Small Arms Working Group (SAWG).

In Australia, the victims of the Port Arthur massacre were remembered on 28 April, the tenth anniversary. With 35 people shot dead and 18 wounded, it remains the largest massacre involving a single gunman. Following the shootings, the gun laws were comprehensively reformed, including a ban on semiautomatic rifles. Commemorating the massacre, the National Coalition for Gun Control called for the extension of the ban to include semiautomatic handguns.
