One in three people are affected by gun violence: new survey
Almost one in three people have been affected by gun crime, according to a survey carried out in six countries worldwide. Commissioned by the Control Arms Campaign, the survey also reveals that over 60% of people felt that it was too easy to obtain a gun in their country. |

Swiss summit on development and small arms
A high-level summit on small arms and development was held in Geneva (Switzerland) on 7 June. Recognising that armed violence can undermine human development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, 42 governments agreed to new commitments in a declaration to be presented to the RevCon. Dr Óscar Arias Sánchez, President of Costa Rica, gave a speech at the summit supporting the international Arms Trade Treaty.

Arms broker imprisoned
Dutch arms dealer Guus van Kouwenhoven was sentenced to 8 years in prison on 7 June at the Hague (Netherlands). Under Dutch law, he was found guilty of violating a UN arms embargo on Liberia. A close associate of ex-president Charles Taylor, van Kouwenhoven facilitated the exchange of weapons for Liberian timber. |
