Global campaign yields global results: This map shows which states have

submitted their views on an Arms Trade Treaty to the UN Secretary-General.

More success for the Arms Trade Treaty campaign

94 governments have responded to the UN Secretary-General's call for states' views on an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). Leading up to the 20 June deadline for submissions, IANSA members around the world intensified their campaigning efforts to ensure maximum participation by governments in the UN process. These efforts have been rewarded: the rate of government responses is far higher than usual for UN consultations and the majority of submissions support the need to take into account impacts on human rights and humanitarian law when approving arms transfers.

Though the official deadline has passed, governments can still send their views on an ATT to the UN; these will be issued as addenda to the main consultation document. Control Arms believes 94 submissions have been made so far and 48 of these are published on the Control Arms website.

Global Week of Action a resounding success

The Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence ended on 17 June following massive advocacy efforts in 60 countries around the world. In addition to extensive global media coverage and public events to raise awareness of work against gun violence, gun laws in several countries were tightened and advocacy efforts for law reform in many more countries is ongoing.

While work against gun violence is the traditional focus of the Week of Action, this year the proposed Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) was a major focus. IANSA members conducted People's Consultations on an ATT and urged their governments to provide their views on the proposed treaty to the UN Secretary-General. More than 80 governments made submissions to the UN prior to the deadline of 20 June.

More information, news and photos of our network's activities against gun violence is on our Week of Action pages.

ECOWAS President endorses Global Week of Action

The Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence has been a resounding success this year, with activities conducted in around 50 countries in every region of the world. IANSA members, government officials and UN Development Program country offices spoke in a unified voice against gun violence at public events, conferences, and in the media. They highlighted the global proliferation of firearms, discussed prevention measures, and took some concrete steps to prevent gun violence.

In Kenya, Control Arms campaigners hired a taxi bus for a day to use as a mobile campaigning vehicle for public outreach. In Mali, a hip-hop concert was held with the theme ‘Youth of Mali say NO to arms’. In Sri Lanka, the Government announced its decision to amend its firearms legislation,  substantially tightening the country’s gun law. And in Abuja (Nigeria) the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) made a public statement endorsing the Week of Action and pledging West Africa’s support for a global Arms Trade Treaty. A press release from WAANSA is available in English and in French on the IANSA West Africa Page.

These are just a few of the events that occurred during the week – more information about activities and media coverage is on our Week of Action pages.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence 2007

The Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence runs from 11-17 June 2007. IANSA members in around 50 countries are joining together to raise awareness about the human cost of gun violence and small arms proliferation. Events will include rallies, media work, publication launches and vigils. As the week progresses, updates will be available on our Week of Action page.

A main theme of the Week of Action is the UN Secretary-General’s consultation with governments on an Arms Trade Treaty. Many IANSA members whose governments have responded to the UN request are asking their government to publish their submissions. Governments that have not made a submission are encouraged to do so before the final deadline of 20 June.

One of the first Week of Action events is the launch of the SAP-Nepal/SASA-Net online art gallery on this site (click on the image above to view). The gallery features the work of Nepalese student artists on the theme of armed violence. The images come from an art competition run by SAP-Nepal and SASA-Net as part of Nepal’s People’s Consultations on an Arms Trade Treaty.
