28 November

India: More than 170 killed in Mumbai attacks

At least 170 people have been killed in acts of terrorism in Mumbai (India) since 26 November. Hundreds more have been injured. The attackers used guns and grenades in six locations across the city centre, including a hospital and the main railway station. By 28 November, gunmen were still present in the Taj Mahal Hotel and Nariman House.


21 November

Ireland bans handguns: will Finland be next?

The Republic of Ireland will become the second country in Europe to ban handguns, after the United Kingdom. However, unlike the UK, which imposed the ban in response to the Dunblane school shooting in 1996, the Irish government decided to act before a major tragedy involving handguns occurs.


14 November

UN investigates mass shooting in DR Congo

At least 26 civilians were shot dead in Kiwanja between 4 and 6 November, according to reports from witnesses provided to MONUC, the United Nations mission in DR Congo. A further 30+ people were injured. Kiwanja is a town north of Goma in North Kivu province, DR Congo. The mass shooting is part of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in North Kivu.


11 November

Bangladesh seeks gun-free elections

On 11 November, the Bangladesh government announced that all civilian guns must be given to the police for safekeeping until 5 January 2009, during the period of the national elections, scheduled for 18 and 28 December.


7 November

Arms campaigners welcome Obama victory

The election of Barack Obama as US President should improve the political environment for progress on gun violence prevention and reducing US arms exports, according to IANSA members in the USA.
