Progress report of Barbara Frey, Special Rapporteur on the prevention of human rights violations committed with small arms and light weapons
The latest report from the Special Rapporteur asserts that small arms misuse has adverse consequences on the human rights of women, and that small arms are used as tools for rape and other forms of gender-based violence. Male-dominated societies often justify small arms possession through the alleged need to protect vulnerable women, though women actually face greater danger of violence when their families and communities are armed. Further, Frey notes that the exclusion of women from shaping policies relating to small arms allows the social manipulation of the gender-based “gun culture” to continue, with devastating impacts on communities.

Betrayal in the Ranks: Sexual Assault in the US Military
Thousands of women have been sexually assaulted in the United States military. Thousands more have been abused by their military husbands or boyfriends. And then they are victimised again. This time, the women are betrayed by the military itself. More than 50 women told The Denver Post their stories. "They said they would order him not to talk to me, but I told them that that wouldn't stop bullets from hitting me," Walker says. "I felt the military abandoned me."
