NATO to punish troops for sex with trafficked women

Troops who have sex with women who may be victims of human trafficking will be punished, NATO told its tens of thousands of forces mid July. The alliance has a "zero-tolerance policy" regarding trafficking in humans and that extends to troops procure the services of women sold into sex slavery. "Most of the young men in question probably have no idea," U.S. ambassador to NATO Nicholas Burns told a briefing of the widespread trafficking that occurs in lawlessness war zones. Punishments will be handed out by national military authorities of the 26 NATO member states rather than uniformly. "These are real penalties," Burns said. "They won't be slaps on the wrist."

Iraq: Wielding guns and handcuffs, women join Iraq police
Whipping out her handgun and slamming a magazine into the grip, 20-year-old Hadeel Alwan can't wait to start catching criminals. "My biggest wish is to destroy terrorism," said Alwan, one of the youngest of Iraq's new women police recruits. "I want to go out on the streets and do everything a man does."

United Nations: Annan Blasts Use of Gender-Based Violence as Weapon in Africa's War
Underscoring the vital importance of Africa’s women for economic development, fighting HIV/AIDS and achieving peace, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has lambasted the use of sexual and gender-based violence as a weapon of war in the continent’s conflicts. “[Women] are gradually finding a place at the negotiating table, in the implementation of peace agreements, in post-conflict rehabilitation, reconstruction and disarmament,” he added. “It is high time they were included in those processes in a more formalized way, at all levels and at all stages.”
