The IANSA Women's Network marks the

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence

IANSA Women's Network members around the world are mobilising and raising awareness of the impact of guns on women's lives as part of the 16 days of activism 2007.

Maria Pia Devoto, director of the Association for Public Policy, delivered a message from the IANSA Women's Network to the Chamber of Deputies in Buenos Aires province.

Day Against Rape: Peaceful march against sexual violence in the presence of the First Lady Madame Olive Lembe Kabila and a delegation of ambassadors from France, Sweden, Belgium, Canada, Spain, Germany, UK, USA and the European Union. Women wore black and carried banners with slogans ‘Put an end to sexual violence’ and ‘We say stop the rape and sexual abuse.’

IANSA Women's Network signed onto UNIFEM's campaign to Say No to Violence against Women! This initiative will lead up to a campaign by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to put a halt to this shameful human rights violation.

South Africa, Ceasefire Campaign

Workshop for women and those who assist women in abusive situations.
The workshop started with input from Ceasefire on how South African society is still carrying the militarisation of the past and how guns were consistently in people’s lives throughout apartheid. Tshwaranang then provided input on the Domestic Violence Act & how it can be used to request a gun is removed from someone when applying for a protection order. Finally Gun Free South Africa explained how the Firearms Control Act can be used to remove a gun or even have someone declared unfit to possess a firearm.

On the twelfth day of the 16 days campaign, a letter was sent to Ambassador Sawer, the UK's representative on the United Nations Security Council, calling on him to ensure that the Security Council fulfills its commitment to effectively tackling sexual and gender-based violence.

The Ikotos Advocates Against Gender Based Violence held a rally and march, followed by a roundtable which covered issues including domestic violence and gun use in the community. There are high number of small arms circulating with no gun control or legislation in place.

Bangladesh, Bangladesh Network on Small Arms (BANSA)
The Bangladesh Network on Small Arms (BANSA) joined with five other human rights organisations to organise a press conference and made 10 demands on the government in relation to violence against women, particularly in light of the recent Cyclone Sidr.

Throughout the 16 days, IANSA Women's Network members in Africa participated in an SMS-based campaign.
Coordinated by WOUGNET, Womensnet, South Africa and APC-Africa-Women (AAW) the regional theme for Africa for 2007 is "I commit to preventing violence against women! What about You? Speak out, reach out, stand out!".
