The Women's Network during the

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

11-17 June 2007

This year members of the Women's Network have marked the Week of Action in the following ways:

Afghanistan/Pakistan

HEWAD held a big convention in Peshawar on 17 June which attracted a large number of female participants from political, social and cultural spheres.


Women teachers and students also participated in speeches, poems and discussion around the Week of Action.

Argentina
As part of activities by the Red Argentina para el Desarme, the Associacion de las Madres del Dolor prepared a special information brochure for distribution at the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires on 15 June.

Burundi

Dagropass organised activities at health centres in Zina and in Nyamitanga, in the Cibitoke province. Several public events were conducted to raise awareness of gun violence and the ATT in Bujumbura and throughout the Bubanza and Cibitoke provinces, including a workshop at the Cibitoke High School on 11 and 12 June.

Media outreach during the Week of Action included a press conference, interviews with Bubanza journalists and two radio broadcasts on Isanganiro and Bonesha FM.

Croatia
The Women's Network Croatia widely circulated a media briefing that drew attention to the ways in which women are affected by gun violence.

El Salvador
On 11 June Cemujer launched the Week of Action in San Salvador with a press conference followed by a public event where 2500 leaflets were distributed highlighting the problem of gun violence against women. 80% of women killed in El Salvador are shot by their partners.

Cemujer also collected signatures for its petition to the Congress asking for a law to prevent domestic violence offenders from owning guns. More than 3500 signatures were collected.

Fiji
On 15 June The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre together with national partner the National Council of Women Fiji and the Pacific Foundation for the Advancement of Women, held a Press Conference to mark the Global Week of Action against Gun Violence and linked local concerns to the global action including the links between culture, masculinity and guns

Guatemala
IEPADES marked the Week of Action with a variety of activities including a press conference on 11 June, a discussion with young people about armed violence on 12 June, a video presentation to the government on 15 June and culminated in the Festival por la Vida in Quetzal City on 17 June.

Haiti
The Organisation de Femmes Pour le Développement de Thomonde had many plans for the week. On 13 June a press release was sent to the major radio stations in Port-with-Prince. On 15 June an open letter to the Government was published in three well-known newspapers. On 16 June a women's feature section in the newspaper “ANAIZ” contained information about the Week of Action. On 17 June seven womens organisations in seven departments held meetings with elected representatives in each region to raise awareness and sensitize them about the week of action. These meetings took place in Western At/Port-with-Prince, Centre/Thomonde, Jérémie/Ville of Jérémie, Western North'/Port-of-Peace, North/Cape-Haitien, South'Are/Marigot and Cayes/Camp-Perin.

India
During the week the Manipuri Women Gun Survivors Network continued to collect testimonies of women gun survivors, helped to open bank accounts and provided practical assistance and support to women.

Macedonia
On 12 June Journalists for Children and Women Rights and Protection of Environment partnered in a press conference in Skopje. Around 20 journalists attended the conference and the event was reported on by news agencies MIA and NETPRESS.

Namibia
On 14 June Pauline Dempers from Breaking the Wall of Silence was interviewed by the Damara/Nama service as part of a talkback radio program. An article about the Week of Action has also been published in The Namibian, titled “Let’s get with the program on guns, urges NGO group”. The article is online at:

Pakistan
During the week Blue Veins had an article published in Frontier News. Blue Veins called for the establishment of a National Commission to address gun violence and to support implementation of the UN Programme of Action on small arms.

Blue Veins also organised a media conference in Mardan that was comprehensively covered by Pakistan media including AVT Khyber TV, Aaj TV, The Muslim, Statesman, Express, Jinnah, Frontier Post, Kahabrain, Awam Un Nas, Alakhbar, Surkhab and Jang Rawalpindi. In addition to the conference, Qamar Naseem from Blue Veins was also interviewed by Voice of America.

In Lahore, the Organisation for Peace and Development held a press conference and participated in interviews to highlight the misuse of guns in the country.

Sierra Leone


On the 14 June, Memunatu Barrie (Ms) of iEARN Sierra Leone and a representative of the Sierra Leone Action Network on Small Arms (SLANSA) participated in an hour long talk show on Radio Kallion FM in Freetown.

Spain
For this year's week of action, the Fundació per la Pau in Catalunya translated the publication 'Survivors: Women affected by gun violence speak out' into Catalan.

The Gambia

On 13 June, WANEP-The Gambia released a press release for the attention of the government, civil society and the general public.


On 15 June they unveiled a billboard to advocate for the ratification of the adopted ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons as well as the global Arms Trade Treaty.

UK
On 13 June the IANSA Women’s Network and Women in Black held a silent vigil in London to mark the Week of Action and gave out leaflets about the impact of guns on women's lives.
