Women most at threat in times of No Peace No War

The proliferation and improper usage of small arms and light weapons in Burundi is a very real danger for women even during the so-called times of “no war no peace”. In parts of rural Bujumbura, for example in the Mutimbuzi community in the Rubirizi zone, the regular army and the former F D D rebels are now working in collaboration to try and track down their enemy, the former ally of the FNL Palipe Hutu rebels, the armed group who have repeatedly refused to enter into negotiations with the current government. Where the two forces, of CNDD and FDD collaborate the relief of the local population is evident. However women and girls still confront serious problems. They are intimidated, raped and forced to marry any man with a gun. If they do not comply, they are killed. Such is the case of the 3 girls Mpozayaha Dénise,Bukuru Géneviève and Tunu who were students at Kinama, all shot by a military officer from the regular army because they refused to marry him. This took place in the province of rural Bujumbura, in the Mutimbuzi community, Rubirizi on the 27th of July at 8pm. Several minutes later, the killer shot himself as he realised he had been recognised by neighbours of the innocent victims. Colonie des pionniers de Développement would like to express extreme concern at this state of affairs and calls upon the women of IANSA to condemn these reprehensible acts.
