Women & Guns Report Launched in Nigeria on 9 June

Enthusiastic participants at the launch of the women and guns report in Nigeria.
The Women’s Network of Nigeria launched the new Control Arms campaign report, The impact of guns on women’s lives, on 9 June to mark the fifth annual Global Week of Action Against Small Arms. The event was formally opened by the Presidential Adviser on Relations with Civil Society , Engr Abba Gana. Presentations were then made by Mrs. Vivien Ere-Imananagha, the Bayelsa State Government Representative in Abuja and Mrs. Elizabeth Shuluwa, the Benue State Commissioner for Women Affairs.
Government figures

Notable government figures such as the Special Adviser (Relations with Civil Society) to the President, Engr Abba Gana, Mrs. Vivien Ere-Imananagha, the Bayelsa State Government Representative in Abuja, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs from Benue State, Mrs Elizabeth Shuluwa, actively participated in the launch of the women and guns report.

The launch was attended by 56 members of various women’s organisations and the press. It received coverage in two daily newspapers, the Daily Trust and the Vanguard. After the launch, a peaceful demonstration was staged on the street. Participants carried placards which displayed messages denouncing armed violence against women.

After the launch of the report, participants moved to the street to peacefully protest against armed violence against women.

The Coordinator of the Women’s Network of Nigeria, Ms Mimidoo Achakpa, hailed the launch a success, noting that it provided female activists in Nigeria with the chance to meet, network and have their voices heard: “I could see the enthusiasm with which the women spoke,” she reported.
